The Art of Contemplation
Art by the Monks of St. Josephs Abbey on exhibit at Anna Maria College
Paxton, MA (November 3, 2009) Anna Maria College announces that it will present a premiere exhibit The Art of Contemplation, Art by the Monks of St. Josephs Abbey, from November 15th through December 12th 2009 in its Miriam Hall Art Gallery, 50 Sunset Lane, Paxton, MA, The exhibit will display extraordinary work by nine Cistercian Monks of St. Josephs Abbey of Spencer, MA. This four-week show will feature a variety of media including watercolor, tempera, gouache, collage, pottery, photography, and hand-painted icons. The Monks will be available to speak about their work during the Opening Reception scheduled for Sunday, November 15th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Many pieces will be available for purchase. A catalog of all pieces will be available at the Gallery and online at www.annamaria.edu.
The art exhibit will also contain icons from the collection of the Museum of Russian Icons of Clinton, MA. During the opening reception, Kent dur Russell, CEO and Curator of the Museum of Russian Icons along with Jesse Rives, Assistant Curator, will speak about the collection and the pieces that are on loan to AMC for this special exhibit.
In connection with the art event, Anna Maria Colleges Bel Canto Choir and St. Josephs Abbey Schola will give a concert on Sunday, November 22 at the Worcester Art Museum at 2:00 p.m. in the Renaissance Court. The two choirs will be performing together featuring Medieval and Renaissance Chants and Motets. The concert is free and open to the public, but requires museum admission. Both the four-week art exhibit and the opening reception are free and open to the public, with limited seating at the reception. The program is being sponsored in part by Nypro Inc., Flexcon Inc, Boston Color Graphics, and Fallon Community Health Plan, with a grant from the Paxton Cultural Commission.
